One of my favorite films ever is Secretary, regardless of the fact that many who know and have heard of it may see it as vulgar. It was, in my opinion, one of the first true representations of true obsession and love in cinema, making it stand out to me in its importance and meaning. Secretary, released in 2002, is closely related to the 2022 Sanctuary, which expresses similar feelings and imagery. Another film that I see as in this genre is Crash, released in 1998, also starring James Spader. The relationship between Secretary and Sanctuary is something I have never seen before. They are so similar and have the same meaning, yet express themselves with an entirely different scenario and switched gender roles. That is very different from an adaptation, where often the main characters and plot of a film are kept the same. Sanctuary, starring Margaret Qualley, almost takes the male role of James Spader in Secretary, completely changing the power dynamic between the characters of Lee vs Hall. Crash, on the other hand, shows the same themes and has an unrelated subplot, but still uses sexuality to express human emotion.

These three films show a level of devotion, obsession, and sexuality that is important for one to understand and appreciate, rather than being viewed as crude or kinky. This brings me to my next point: the difference between erotic and kinky media. The word erotic perfectly encapsulates these films and shows the beauty behind them. Describing them as kinky has a negative connotation and may suggest these films depict something shameful. This is because of the stigma around sex in society and the lack of education around it, making films such as these seem as though they are disgusting.
